“Taking a detour from the more typical Inca trail to the salt lakes of Bolivia route in South America leads you to the inspiring Colca Canyon in Peru, reportedly the deepest in the world.
Travelling out of the white city of Arequipa you pass through hills, dotted with statues of offerings to the gods and often covered in a shielding mist before dropping into the canyon. The views are truly spectacular and without the influx of western tourists there are no restrictions on how close to the edge you dare to go. This in itself is reason enough to visit this dramatic landscape but add to that the virtually guaranteed appearance of Andean Condors. These graceful creatures use the thermals from the canyon to glide effortlessly through the air while their keen eyes are looking out for suitable prey. The best time for viewing the condors is early morning so it is advisable to arrive in the area the night before and enjoy the truly local hospitality of the tiny villages surrounding the area.
After being inspired by the condors and a full day of walking/scrambling through the canyon there is simply nothing better than a trip to the hot springs at Chivay as the dusk is falling to soothe your blisters. These natural hot springs are carved out of the cliff edge and give the feeling that while you are soaking in the free falling steamy water you are also floating over the canyon. Cleverly designed lighting and a fantastic poolside bar only add to this experience, if you can time your visit for the sunset it is nothing short of perfect.
Having spent time exploring the far reaches of South America, the fascinating cultures and landscapes of Central America are next on my list of must-see destinations. Unequivocally my first ports of call are Guatemala and Houduras. From meandering coastlines to towering volcanoes, these neighbouring countries offer a fantastic opportunity to discover secrets that are currently undetected by the tourist radar. Impenetrable jungles, Mayan Ruins, quirky local transport in the form of brightly painted buses and the chance to while away the evening listening to the cry of the Howler monkeys filtering through the trees, all appeal to the adventurer in me.
If ever there was a example of the perfect Talent Scout destination that truly inspires….This is it.
